From hiking in Garraf to sunset beach bars. The best things to do in Castelldefels for couples, families and groups of friends.
Castelldefels: much more than beach
When you think of Castelldefels, the first thing that comes to mind is its beach. And rightly so: 5 km of golden sand are hard to ignore. But this town 20 minutes from Barcelona has much more to offer. Here are 20 must-do activities for your stay.
Nature and outdoors
1. Climb to Castelldefels Castle
The castle that gives the town its name sits atop a hill with spectacular views of the sea and mountains. The walk up from the centre is a pleasant 20-minute stroll through pine trees. Guided tours are available on weekends.
2. Hiking in Garraf Natural Park
Garraf Natural Park is literally on Castelldefels' doorstep. Routes for all levels, from gentle walks to demanding treks with Mediterranean views.
3. Cycling along the promenade
The bike lane runs along the entire Castelldefels coast to Gavà. It's about 10 km (round trip), flat and by the sea. Perfect for a quiet morning.
4. Olympic whitewater channel
Built for the 1992 Olympic Games, the channel offers rafting, kayaking and paddle surfing activities in calm waters. Great for families.
Beach and sports
5. Kitesurfing in the southern zone
Castelldefels is one of the best kitesurfing spots near Barcelona. Several schools offer beginner courses from €80.
6. Paddle surfing at sunrise
Rent a board from any beach bar and hit the water first thing in the morning. The sea is flat and the experience is magical.
7. Golf at Club de Golf Terramar
An 18-hole course by the sea, designed by F.W. Hawtree. One of the best in Catalonia. Green fees from €60.
8. Beach volleyball
Free courts in the Pineda area. Very lively on summer weekends.
Gastronomy
9. Beach bars with your feet in the sand
From casual Vaivén to more sophisticated options, eating at a beach bar facing the sea is a must-do experience.
10. Rice dishes at Ca l'Estevet
If you're only going to eat one rice dish in Castelldefels, make it here. Rice with local produce and sea views.
11. Tapas in the centre
The Castelldefels town centre has excellent tapas bars that are less touristy than Barcelona. Try the Plaza de la Iglesia area.
12. Artisan ice cream
Several artisan ice cream shops along the promenade with local flavours. Perfect for the post-beach stroll.
Culture and family
13. Visit the medieval Castle
Besides the views, the castle hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The Romanesque church of Santa María is a gem.
14. Day trip to Barcelona
The commuter train (Renfe R2) gets you to Passeig de Gràcia in 30 minutes. Castelldefels is the perfect base for visiting Barcelona without the noise and prices of the city.
